Capital Punishment

I chose to talk about the topic of Capital Punishment. Even though it is a very controversial subject it wasn’t a major issue in this year’s election. Capital Punishment is defined as the killing of a person by judicial process as punishment. It is only issued by the Supreme Court and the jury for the highest crimes known as capital crimes or capital offences. Some of those offences are crimes such as murder, espionage, treason, or as part of military justice. So is Capital Punishment necessary? Numerous people agree and disagree with this topic and join together and make support and protest groups. Capital Punishment was first invented in the 18 century B.C. then later in 1968 and then it was later reinstated in 1976. Also out of the 50 states in America only 36 states are in favor of the Capital Punishment. So naturally since the death penalty is a very controversial topic it has a lot of different view points toward it and of course religion plays into it because the death penalty involves death and murder. Most religions are impartial or just against the death penalty even though it was made when the religions were really strong and in more so at the time. But whenever you look at the topic itself you can both break it down and look at its ethical aspect or its philosophy. The ethical aspect is the right and wrongness of the issue. The philosophy part is whether the death penalty is a violation of the right to life and if it will benefit human lives and welfare. Some interesting facts to know about Capital Punishment is that statistics show that in the year of 2007 alone there have been 42 executions and in the last ten years ending with 2007 there have been a total of 667. That doesn’t seem big until you look at the fact that these were walking, talking, and breathing human beings that have a life and families. Statistics state that China had the most executions carried out in 2007 at 470 or more. In comparison in 2007 The United States only had 42 executions, 17 were black and 28 were white Americans. The 42 executions were all males and lethal injections were administered in 41 executions, the electric chair was given to the remaining one. In the United States there are currently 3,200 inmates on death row awaiting capital punishment. Since the death penalty was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976, 1,802 white inmates have made up more than half of the number under sentence of death. As far as women are concerned there are 52 women were under a sentence of death. There is no set age group or category on the people who are arrested and sentenced to death. In 2007 the youngest and oldest inmate under sentence of death were ages 20 and 91. When it comes to the Death Penalty there are different methods to executions lethal injections, electric chair and the gas chamber . The most common is lethal injection, which is injecting a person with a fatal dose of drugs for the purpose of causing the death of the subject. The electric chair which originated from the United States. It is execution by electrocution which the person being put to death is strapped to a specially built wooden chair and electrocuted through electrodes placed on the body. The gas chamber is a sealed off chamber into which a poisonous gas is then used to execute the sentenced inmate. There are also other methods not used in the U.S. like the Firing squad and other types of shooting executions.
Now to talk about and the pros and cons and the effectiveness of Capital Punishment in the U.S. Since this topic is controversial there are a number of debates and arguments on the subjects there are good and strong points from both sides. There are lots of pros for the death penalty a most recent argument is that Capital punishment encourages or scares criminals not to do the crime. Also it is a guarantee that the killer will not kill again and it will protect more innocent lives than it does accidentally take the life of innocent convicts. It is said to be more economical because killing the inmate costs less than housing him/her for a lifetime however, this is also debatable. Why should money be spent on a criminal when it could be spent on education, the sick, or the needy? The only reason why it is so expensive to execute an individual is because of the numerous appeals processes. Another pro is that it permanently removes that threat from society and will prevent further crimes whether they are similar to that the death sentenced inmate committed or not. Criminals will not want to commit a major a crime for the fear of being sentenced to death row and possibly being executed.
With any controversial subject if there are pros there are cons and some basic ones are that it increases the death rate, it is financially and economically bad for the country and that it violates human rights. If murder is wrong why do we result to it as punishment? Other reasons that Capital Punishment is looked at as ineffective is that it doesn’t always decrease the crime rate because in those 38 states that support it the crime rate hasn’t lowered. It certainly doesn’t regain the victims life back so does it really bring happiness or peace to the victims family? In California alone it cost $114 million more a year than a life sentence in prison; it costs approximately $90,000 more a year to house an inmate on a sentence of death row than in regular prison.
Since I look at it from a religious perspective I am in between because who are we to take someone’s life we are not God or their creator. But also it might be needed as an example that Capital crimes are not taken lightly and can or will be punished heavily. I think that only certain severe crimes should be punishable by death and that extensive investigation and DNA testing should be done to make sure the criminal is the right person. Also the methods may be a bit cruel or harsh for some of these crimes especially if the person who committed the crime snapped and dint have any past history of convictions or crimes. Also when we look at the statistics showing the number of executions at the end f that year all the numbers should be relatively low and decrease and not increase or fluctuate between the both.
I am not an expert I just conducted a general research on the topic but people who feel a certain way about this topic whether it be for or against they should do the same so they can get a better understanding of the topic and try to look at it from a non biased source also get involved because it is a law and does affect us because it’s our economy and our country and even networking with groups who feel the same or view it the same as you do is a good idea. Since in this year’s election it wasn’t major the website source for the campaigns didn’t really touch on this subject because it is still important and good to know where the person you are voting for stands on this issue. This issue alone could change how you view the candidate or vote for the candidate this is something that has a big effect on the country so who you vote for can also get a little of your views or opinions out there through that person you chose to vote for.

This weeks current event is on Barack Obama and him unveiling his new team who intends to create or save 2.5 million jobs within the next two years. To read more information go to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27885917/. Obama is rolling out an economic vision that will require congressional cooperation even before he settles into his new position in the White House. Monday President-Elect Obama is going to take a big step toward recovering the economy. Obama aides on Sunday called on the new Congress to pass by the Jan. 20 inauguration legislation that meets Obama's two year goal. Democratic congressional leaders said they would get to work when Congress convenes Jan. 6. This Plan also will not raise taxes for the wealthy.

This article doesn't come off as being bias to me. It really doesn't get into the whole new plan so I'm curious to know how that's going to work that's the only information that is missing to me. My opinion is that i hope he gets the economy back on track. My questions are when is he going to go into greater detail on this plan and is this going to make the two year goal agenda on time. It effects and is important because this economy is what me and every other American lives in.

3 More Years???

This weeks current event that I chose is on Iraq's Cabinet voting on U.S. security Pact which would keep the U.S. forces in the country for another three years to read more go on http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27731322/. Iraq's Cabinet will vote Sunday on a security pact with Washington that would keep U.S. forces in the country for another three years, a major step in efforts to balance Iraqi demands for national sovereignty. Because on December 31 the U.N. mandate covering the presence of U.S. and other foreign forces in Iraq expires. Also a failure to pass the agreement would leave Iraq with little choice but to seek a renewal of the mandate. Two Cabinet ministers said Iraqi and U.S. negotiators have agreed on a final draft of the security pact with the United States and it looks like a good chance on the voting tomorrow.

I personally don't think it was bias because its kind of telling a story and about how votes can go. For the most part a lot to all the information is here. Mt opinion is that we should try and help as much as we can but be able to bring and send soldiers out more efficiently then we are doing but then again i really don't know what to think. My question is whats going to happen will the out come be good. This effects me and is important to me because i live in this country.

Mr. Obama???

This weeks current event is on the new president Obama and his reassessing of his priorities. the story is on http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27611106/. It seems that president Obama and his advisers are trying to figure out which of his liberal campaign promises to dive into in the opening months of his new president role and which to put on a slower track. Obama said on Saturday that his first priority would be an economic recovery program to get the nation’s business system back on track and people back to work. The only thing stopping that is the $700 billion financial bailout threatens to push the deficit into the stratosphere. “The poor man has his hands tied by the economic and financial mess we have right now,” said John Tuck, a former aide to President Ronald Reagan. “I don’t know what his options are. They’re very, very limited.” Obama signaled that he intended to move quickly to address the nation’s financial problems, despite any obstacles. “I want to ensure that we hit the ground running on Jan. 20,” he said on Saturday, “because we don’t have a moment to lose.”

This article is 100% bias it doesn't address Obama as president Obama but Mr. Obama. Also MSNBC is more from a conservative stand point on its views on story. No important information is missing its all here just bias. My opinion is strong on the fact that he should be addressed as president Obama. I just want to see how this is all going to play out and if this economy is going to get better. It effects and is important because this economy is what me and every other American lives in.

Politics 101

The story i chose is on in just two days, most polls show Barack Obama ahead of John McCain and you can read more on http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27483362/. With just two days to go, most national polls show Obama ahead of McCain, and state surveys suggest the Democrat's 270 electoral votes and maybe more is much easier to navigate than McCain's.The polls show the six closest states are Florida, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio all won by Bush and made competitive by Obama's record-shattering fundraising. the only thing now is to go out Tuesday and vote if it hasn't already been done. About 27 million absentee and early votes were cast in 30 states as of Saturday night that is way more than ever. The Democrats outnumbered Republicans in pre-Election Day voting in key states. That has Democrats and even some Republicans privately questioning whether McCain can overtake Obama. But now McCain and the RNC dramatically ramped up their spending in the campaign's final days and now are matching Obama ad for ad, if not exceeding him, in key battleground markets in states such as Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

This article wasn't bias to me i think it was going off statistics and they are pretty straight forward. I think the information is all there but it never said how McCain got his money. My opinion is i cant wait for the new president to win and makes changes and election day is almost here. I just want to know where he got the money from. Its important and affects me because this is going to help me see who my next president is.

My current event this week is on former sen. McCain and how he says Bush failed in number of areas and you can check this out on http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27386775/. McCain says he was proud to be a republican but believed the Bush administration had failed in a number of areas, asking voters to remember that “I’m not George Bush.” Lately, McCain and his campaign have broken away from bush and his administration because they are unpopular with the vote, blaming him for the economic downturn and a record national debt. Even McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said that Bushs unpopularity as the campaign’s most biggest obstacle. McCain acknowledged that he has voted with Bush more than 90 percent of the time, but he said that on the most important issues like the U.S. strategies in Iraq, climate change and the economy, he was not popular in my own party.”

I don't think this was bias it was straight forward because its an interview. I think the information is all there because he was pretty straight forward about what he wanted to say. I don't really have an opinion on McCain because i haven't really followed him. I don't have question because if you watch it you will understand a lot it wont leave you lost.its important and affects me because he might be my next president.

Sunday, October 19, 2008

My current event this week is on former sen. on Collin Powell and how he says that he backs Obama and you can read more at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27265369/ . This morning Oct 19, 2008 Collin Powell endorsed Sen. Obama for president. He also criticized his own republican party for what he called a narrow focus on personal attacks over a serious approach to presidential challenges. Powell clearly stated he was not supporting Obama because his race. He said he had watched both Obama and his republican opponent Sen. McCain for many months and thought "either one of them would be a good president." But he said McCain’s choices in the last few weeks especially his selection of Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate had raised questions in his mind about McCain’s judgment. “I don’t believe Palin is ready to be president of the United States,” Powell said flatly. By contrast, Obama’s running mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, “is ready to be president on day one.”

I found this harder to summarize than the rest because it has lots of conversation and dialogue. This story comes off unbiased to me though. Something to me is missing and that's why is it that he doesn't think Palin isn't ready but Biden is. My opinion is not much into it because this isn't really gonna effect the elections outcome. This is a big important story because its our politicians and are in charge of our government. That is also how it affects my life.
